Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I’m the founder of our center in Akron OH. I want to give you some information to help you to make a decision. Not every therapist is the right fit, and so I’m going to tell you a little bit about our approach and see if it’s the kind of thing that you’re looking for. Also, especially if you’re new to therapy, I’m going to tell you some things about what to expect. How does this process work? I’m also going to give you some practical stuff that I think everyone should know when wondering how to pay for therapy.
All human beings run into challenges. We all hit roadblocks and we don’t have the answers, or perhaps the strategies that we’ve been using just don’t work anymore. It’s a natural and normal thing to reach out and ask for help, and I think a lot of times in our culture, we’re taught that it is not a good thing, we’re weak for doing so. And it just isn’t true.
Reaching out for help to a licensed professional could sometimes be the best thing you’ve ever done. We have helped a lot of people move forward in their life in healthy ways, so we have a lot of skills and experience to bring to the table. Different than family or friends, talking to one of us is a unique place because this is one place in your life where it gets to be just about you. This isn’t a dual relationship where you have to worry about our feelings; this is all about you and moving forward in your life.
Much like a coach, we’re here to help you figure out the right kind of strategy to move forward in your life. And with your help, we’re going to deepen our understanding by asking questions. Your first session, you’re going to tell us your thoughts, your feelings, your opinions about your life, and it’s a very interactive process. We give a lot of feedback, and I think clients like that.
You’re going to learn a lot about yourself, more than perhaps you ever have. And it can be very relieving just even having a deeper understanding of what’s been going on in your life, and of course, that’s the springboard we use to help you move forward.
A great way to get to know us, though, is to go on our website. We have a bunch of videos and articles where you can probably find a life issue that you can relate to and maybe even get some help now. But you’re going to get to know the kinds of advice that we can give.
The best thing you can do, though, is to reach out, pick up the phone and give us a call. One of our lovely receptionists can answer basic questions for you, and they can direct you to the therapist that you would be seeing. You can tell them a little bit about what’s going on in your life and see how it goes, see if it’s a comfortable conversation. We’re probably going to ask you a little bit about that, and we’re going to probably tell you the times that we’re available to see you. And if you feel comfortable with the person on the phone, then make an appointment. We’re here to help.
Help paying for therapy is a whole different thing, and sometimes people have what’s called out-of-network coverage. You can call your insurance provider and see if they have out-of-network coverage. And if they do, we can give you an invoice. If you have something called flex spending, some sort of employee benefit, we sometimes help people use those monies to pay for therapy, and you can ask your employer about that.
