Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I’m the founder of our center in Springfield, MA. I’m here to give you some information that will hopefully help you make a decision if we are the right Springfield therapist for you. I’m going to give you a little bit about what to expect when you come to counseling, it’ll be very helpful, especially if this is your first time. And I’m going to give you some basic information about how to help pay for therapy.
So, first of all, everyone in their lives needs help from time to time. It’s important to say that. I think a lot of us don’t feel like it’s okay to ask for help, and it’s a very natural and healthy thing to do. And reaching out to a licensed therapist could be a very good decision. We’ve helped a lot of people over the years.
Typically, people come in and let us know what’s going on in their lives. We listen to their thoughts, their feelings, their opinions about their life issue. And we’ll most likely ask a lot of questions. We’re very interactive therapists here, and I think that’s a very comfortable way to come to therapy. It’s much like a conversation, but we’re getting to know you, and the more we get to know you, the more we’re able to help.
It’s a really neat process, too, because I think a lot of us have family and friends to talk to, some of us do not, but this is a very unique relationship, this is one place in your life where it gets to be just about you. We can get to know you, and through that dialogue, a lot of people really discover a lot of really helpful things about themselves when we ask those deep questions; you get to explore yourself and you get to have a better understanding of what’s going on in your life. That alone can be very helpful.
Beyond that, we are solution-focused therapists. What that means is that we’re not just good listeners, but we’re active participants helping you create a roadmap to move forward in your life so that you can be happier and move through your life issue.
Another thing that might be helpful for you if you want to take the first step to getting to know us is watching some of the videos or articles on our website. You can probably get a good idea of the kinds of advice that we can give.
But I might recommend, if you give a call, you can talk to our lovely receptionists and they can answer some basic questions, and they can direct you to the therapist that’s best for you. You can talk to that person on the phone, free of commitment. It’s just a great way to get to know the person that you would be seeing to see if you’re comfortable with that person on the phone. Tell them a little bit about why you want to come in. They’re probably going to tell you a lot about all the times that, you know, you can see them in the near future and you can come in as soon as possible.
Now, sometimes people want help paying for therapy. If you have any insurance, you can call your insurance company and verify if you have what’s called out-of-network coverage. And if you do, we can give you an invoice, you can try to seek reimbursement through your insurance company. Some people have health benefits where you can use things like flex spending to help pay for therapy. We can give invoices for that as well.
