Hello, my name is Sevin Philips. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I’m the Founder of the Relationship Counseling Center in Portland. We specialize in relationships, that’s what we do best. This video is to help you answer the questions: first of all, are we the right therapist for you? Second of all, you’ll get some great information, especially if this is your first time, that’ll help you figure out what couples counseling or individual therapy is all about.

We help couples by helping them create a safe environment where there’s no judgment and no blame, and get to the bottom of what’s really going on between you two. I find that when couples figure out and get clear about what’s going on, they feel much better. Most importantly, we’re experts at giving the kind of communication skills and tools necessary to treat each other better and to maintain your relationship, especially when you end therapy so you can be happy.
One of the things that sets us apart, other than all of us being licensed therapists, we’re also old enough to have enough life experience to back up our skillset – that’s important for you to know that. We also come across as very down-to-earth, we give a lot of very direct feedback, we’re very interactive which I think people find very refreshing. We help create relationship goals. What’s important for you creating relationship goals is you can track how you’re doing in counseling: are you achieving your goals? Of course, when you have, you know it’s time to end therapy which of course is the main end result of all therapy is we want you to be happy in your life so you don’t have to be here anymore. Many of us consider our style of therapy which is very solution-focused and very coaching style to couples counseling, to be short-term therapy. We help couples on average anywhere between 6 to 8 sessions. You might want more which is completely fine as well.

The next step is really to give me a call. I can answer – hopefully – any question you might have. I also, if everything makes sense to you and feels good, we’ll have our Portland therapist call you immediately so you can tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in, they can tell you all the times that they can see you, both day and evening. We usually can get you in within 24 to 48 hours. That initial phone call is also a great first step in getting to know your therapist and making it a very comfortable transition into your first session.

Something you want to keep in mind when it comes to the money is that we are licensed therapists at our Portland offices, so if you have any out-of-network coverage through work, you might get reimbursement. Please verify that with your insurance company. If so, we’ll give you an invoice so you can give it to your insurance company. Also, some people have flex spending or health savings accounts and use those funds to pay for their therapy.

If you haven’t noticed, I have a lot of videos on this website. I suggest you check it out. First of all, it’s free information. It’s the kind of advice that many of our therapists will give you, so maybe you can help your relationship right here and now. In addition, it’s a great way to get to know who we are, the kind of style of therapists we are, the kind of advice we give.

If you’d like to take the next step, please give me a call. Thank you.

So, I’ve had what I’ll call “classic” issues with therapy. Until about 18 months ago, I thought that I could just deal with whatever I needed to, without help. Yeah. Then, I had a couple of unsuccessful starts with a couple of other therapists; One who really sucked, and one whose style was more along
