Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist and I’m the founder of our counseling center in Glendale and Pasadena area. I’m here to give you some information that I think is going to be very helpful for you when you’re trying to decide who the right therapist is for you. Also, if you’ve never done therapy before, I want to give you some idea of who we are and what to expect.
Now, first of all, I always want people to know this: that everyone runs into trouble from time to time in their life, and it’s a very helpful and useful idea to reach out to somebody who not only is a licensed therapist, but has a lot of experience in helping people move forward in their lives. It’s okay to ask for that kind of help.
Usually when clients come in, we want to get to know you; we want to know your thoughts, your ideas, your feelings about the subject. With that information, we often can help you be more self-aware about what’s happening, how this got this way, but most importantly, how to move forward in your life. We are solution-focused therapists so although we do a lot of exploration in the beginning of therapy, eventually we’re going to get into what kind of skills or tools are necessary for you to start implementing in your life to create the kind of life, the relationships that you want to have.
Sometimes we have friends and family that we can talk to, and if you do, that is great; not everyone has that. In addition, sometimes friends and family aren’t always the best people to talk to about some subjects. It’s a very personal and private conversation that you can have with a therapist. You don’t have to worry about our feelings. We’re here for you completely, and that’s what makes this relationship really unique – we are here for you and you alone. We get to know you in a way, sometimes, that even friends and family don’t. It’s a very special relationship. Sometimes in very short periods of time, we can help people move forward in really amazing ways.
A good first step might be just to go on our website and look at some of the videos and articles. We talk about issues that you might have and you might find something that you can relate to. Also, you’re going to get to know who we are a little bit through those articles and videos. I also recommend that you pick up the phone and give us a call. We may be able to direct you to one of our therapists locally, and you can talk to them right now, get to know who they are. You can tell them a little bit about what’s going on in your life on the phone, get a sense of them, get more comfortable with your therapist and see if you click. And if you do, then you can commit to making an appointment.
Sometimes people want to pay for therapy using sources other than their own money, and sometimes people have what’s called out-of-network coverage. You can verify that with your insurance company, and if you do, we may be able to give you an invoice to get you some money back. Also, you may have benefits through work, like flex spending. Sometimes people use those funds to help pay for their therapy. We specialize in a solution-focused approach to individual counseling, couples therapy, couples counseling and marriage counseling.
