Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist and I’m the founder of our center in Norfolk. I’ve created this video to help you make a decision if we are the right therapist for you. I’m going to give you some understanding of what to expect when you come to therapy, maybe this is your first time, and that would be very helpful. Let you know the kinds of approaches that we take. But I’m also going to give you some basic information about how to help pay for therapy, which I think everyone should know.
First off, everyone runs into trouble in their life and they don’t always have the answers. I think sometimes we feel like we’re unique in that way, and I can assure you that everyone in their life runs into challenges and we need to ask for help. It’s a very healthy thing to do. Reaching out to a licensed therapist could be a very good first step. We’ve helped a lot of people through issues, and we have a lot of tools and skills that we could help clients with.
Now, when you come into your first session, most likely we’re going to ask you some questions, we’re going to get to know you. You’re going to share your thoughts, your feelings, your opinions about your own life issue, and we’re going to have a very casual conversation. It’s a very interactive process working with one of our therapists, and I think a lot of people find that very comfortable. And as we get to know you, we’re going to be able to help you. And in that process of asking questions, I often find that clients get to know themselves in a way that they never have before, having a deeper understanding of what’s going on in your life can feel really good.
This is a very unique relationship, it’s different than family or friends. You might have people to talk to, but in this relationship, this is one place it gets to be only about you, and that’s a great place for it to be safe and for you to explore yourself in ways that you just don’t always do with friends or family.
After we get to know you and ask questions, we’re probably going to help you create a roadmap to move forward in your life. We are solution-focused therapists, so we’re going to use the tools that we have, and with your help, create a plan and support you moving forward in your life in a very good way. We’re not only going to help you during session, but we’re going to support you in your life as you move forward at your own pace.
A great way to get to know us is probably to watch some of the videos or read some of the articles on our website. It’s just a good way to get to know the kinds of advice that we can give. Probably the best thing to do, though, is to reach out and give us a call. One of our helpful receptionists will answer your basic questions.
And if you’d like to talk to the therapist, you can ask them to connect and you can talk to that person on the phone. There’s no commitment. It’s really a great way to get to know the person to see if you’re comfortable with them. You can tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in. They’re probably going to tell you all the times that you can see them so that you can come in as soon as possible. And only then, if you feel comfortable, you make an appointment.
I hope this is helpful information. And one last thing I might say is that if you are looking for ways to help pay for therapy, you might have insurance that has what’s called out-of-network coverage. If you ask your insurance company if you have out-of-network coverage and they say that you do, we can give you an invoice that might help get you some money back. Also, through work, you might have an employee benefit, something like flex spending, and sometimes people use those dollars to help pay for therapy.
