Hi. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist, and I’m here to give you information that’s going to be very helpful in understanding if we are the right therapist for you, perhaps even if therapy is the right choice for you to help you in your life. If you’re new to therapy, what to expect in your first session, and a good understanding of the kinds of approaches that we give. I’m also going to give you some practical information about how to help pay for therapy.
Every human being runs into challenges in their life, and it’s completely healthy for you to reach out and ask for help. A lot of us don’t think it is; there’s something wrong with us if we need to ask for help, or we’re weak, perhaps, for having asked for help. And I really encourage everyone to move beyond that, because as far as I see it, including myself, everyone needs to ask for help from time to time and it’s just a good thing to do.
Reaching out to a licensed professional is perhaps one of the best decisions to make. This relationship is really unique. Unlike family or friends, or perhaps you don’t even have that, it’s a unique place where it only gets to be about you. You don’t have to worry about us; we’re here to help you, and it’s a very safe place to talk about your life.
We’re going to get to know you when you come into that first session, and probably ask questions about what’s going on in your life. You’re going to share your thoughts, your feelings, your opinion about your life issue, and we’re going to have a very interactive conversation about it. We’re going to deepen our understanding of what’s going on in your life so that we can help you. And what I often find is clients, through having this kind of a conversation, often feel more clarity and understanding about what’s been happening in their lives, which can be very helpful. It’s a good first step.
And when we have a deeper understanding, we can figure out how to move forward in a different way than you have in the past. With the kinds of skills and tools that we have from helping all the people we’ve helped, we’ll create something very unique with your help about how to move forward in your life. We are solution-focused therapists, so we want to ultimately help you create really great strategies, much like a coach.
A good thing to do would be to watch some of the videos and articles on our website, it’s a great first step. You can probably find a life issue on there you can relate to and maybe even some advice that will help you right now. You also will get to know the kinds of advice that we can have.
The best suggestion I can give you is just to pick up the phone. You can talk to one of our lovely receptionists and they can answer any basic question you might have. But ultimately, you can talk to the therapist that you would be seeing on the phone. There’s no commitment. It’s just a good way to see if you feel like it’s a good fit, a good personality fit. Tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in and see if you want to make the first appointment.
If you’d like help paying for therapy, if you have insurance, I might recommend calling them. You could ask them if they have what’s called out-of-network coverage. And if you have out-of-network coverage then we may be able to assist you with an invoice to help get some sort of reimbursement back.
