Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist and I’m the founder of our counseling center in Memphis, TN. I’m doing this video to help you make a good decision on whether we are the right Memphis therapist for you, and also give you some really good information about what to expect, especially if this is your first time coming to therapy.I know it can be a scary experience for many people, reaching out to somebody you do not know and ask for help. It’s a completely natural and normal and healthy thing to do, though, and I really encourage you to do so.

Our first session, we usually ask you a little bit about your thoughts, your feelings, your opinions about what’s going on in your life and about your life issue. And it’s a great time for us to ask questions. We want to get to know you, and the better we get to know you, the more we’re going to be able to help. What’s really interesting about asking questions is I think clients often learn about themselves. We get to explore and discover things, and I often find clients have epiphanies about themselves and a deeper level of understanding just by having that kind of a conversation.

But more than that, we are solution-focused therapists, so you know, in your own time, we are going to help you with tools or skills that are directly related to your life issue and we’re going to help you take those out of our therapy and into the world so that you can create the life that you want. I think it’s important for you to know that.

We’re not only licensed therapists, but we are also old enough and have enough life experience to back up our skillset. We work with a lot of people. Now, you might want to check out our website. We have a lot of videos and articles on our website which gives you I think information about the kinds of advice that we might give, which is a great way to take a first step.

Although the best thing I could recommend is for you to give us a call. Our friendly receptionist will probably answer any basic question that you have, but if you want to talk to the therapist that you would be seeing, it’s a great thing to do because you can get to know them a little bit on the phone, you could get to know their personality. They’re probably going to ask you a little bit about why you’re coming in. And if you feel comfortable, you can make an appointment with that person.

Some ways that people get help paying for therapy, one of them is individual counseling with out-of-network benefits. So if you call your insurance provider and ask: “Do you have out-of-network benefits for individual counseling?” you might be able to use your insurance, and we can give you an invoice and get some money back. If you have any employee benefits, something like flex spending, sometimes we can give an invoice and you can use those monies to help pay for it as well. We specialize in a solution-focused approach to individual counseling, couples therapy, couples counseling and marriage counseling.

So, I hope this was helpful and if you’d like to take the next step, please give us a call. Thank you.

Hello, my name is Sevin Philips. I’m a Licensed Therapist and I’m the Founder of the Relationship Counseling Center in Memphis, TN. This video is going to help you understand whether we are the right therapists for you, and it’s going to answer some good questions, especially if you’re new to therapy, that everyone should know. We work with individuals and couples.

When couples come in, we create a safe environment so they can get to the bottom of what’s really going on. With this added clarity, I often find couples move forward a lot easier. We also are experts at giving tools and skills to couples so that they can maintain their relationship and move forward in a very respectful way. Some of the things that set us apart: we not only are licensed therapists in Memphis, TN, but everyone I hire is old enough to have enough life experience to back up our skillset – and that’s important for you to know. We have a direct and interactive exchange. We’re not only listening to you each and every session, we’re active participants helping you create a good relationship. We take the skills that we teach you in here and we have you do them at home where it matters most because when things get better at home and your life turns around, you end therapy.

Many people find us to be a very solution-focused and coaching styled to couples counseling. Although individuals come in as well. Sometimes people want to come in when they’re dating because they want to get clear about the choices they’re making to hopefully find a really good partner and maybe not make the same mistakes. Sometimes people who are in a marriage want to come in by themselves to talk about their relationship, maybe to examine it, to get clear, or to know what they can do to help. Of course, we specialize in marriage counseling and couples therapy.

The first step really is to give me a call. I can answer – hopefully – any question you might have. If everything feels good, I’ll have the therapist in Memphis, TN call you immediately. We usually can get you in within 24 to 48 hours. During the call with your therapist, you can tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in. They’ll tell you a little bit about what times they can see you, both day and evening.

On the money side, I always want people to consider out-of-network therapy insurance. You can verify with your insurance company if you have out-of-network coverage, and if you do, we can give you an invoice that may get you some money back. You also might have something like flex spending or health savings accounts through work and sometimes you can use those funds to pay for your counseling.

A good thing to do is to go to our website and watch some of the videos that we have here. It’s a great way to get to know who we are, what kind of counselors we have, in addition to the fact of the kind of advice that we give. It will help you make your decision.
I implore you, if you’d like to take the next step, give me a call. Thank you.

Make Beautiful Music Together in Memphis

When you think of Memphis what comes to mind? The “Blues?” Barbeque? Elvis Presley? If so, you are right on three accounts. It is true that Memphis is known for its music, food, and Elvis, of course. But, did you know that it is also a city of romance? No? Well, it is. Let’s face it – Memphis is sexy. Think about it, what other city can boast that it is the hometown of Elvis, Justin Timberlake, and even Al Green? None – just Memphis. And, really – how cool is that? In fact, some of the most romantic songs were created right in your city. That is why Memphis should be listed below the term “love songs” in the dictionary. So, as the saying goes – it’s not over until the last piece of barbeque has been eaten. Ok, ok, I made up the barbeque saying, but you get my drift. There is still hope for your relationship, just look into your sweetheart’s eyes and serenade him or her with your own unique rendition of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together.” But, don’t forget to also try these ultra-swoon-worthy “couple activities” to get your relationship back on track.

Listed below are some ways that you and your partner can harmoniously reconnect:

Memphis Botanic Gardens
Is your relationship losing some of its beauty and wonder? If so, invite your partner to the Memphis Botanic Gardens. And, once there, stroll hand-in-hand through the Japanese Garden, marveling at its splendor. Once you have finished walking through the various gardens (almost 100 acres in total) pick a cozy spot and have an old-fashioned picnic (assuming that the weather cooperates). Truth-be-told, there is something for all couples, who like the outdoors to do at the Memphis Botanic Gardens. If you are looking for a way to reconnect with your significant other, this is an excellent first step. And, guess what? Well, during the holiday season, the garden hosts a real-life winter wonderland, complete with white, fluffy snow and steaming hot chocolate, available at a moment’s notice. And, that’s not all – during the spring and summer months, there are weekend concerts in the Gardens, where you and your sweetheart can enjoy good music and good company, as you watch your favorite artists belt it out under the stars. And, really, what better way is there to rekindle the romance in your relationship, while having the best-time-ever? None!

Memphis Zoo
Maybe what you and your partner need to repair your damaged relationship is to take a “walk on the wild side.” Yep, I’m talking about the Memphis Zoo. So, if you want to add some “zest” to your relationship, and do something new and out-of-the-ordinary with your partner, take some time out to enjoy the “Zoo.” What’s so great about this zoo? Well, how can you be mad when you are gazing at cuddly pandas and gigantic polar bears? You can’t. And, what is even better about the zoo is that you and your partner can get up close and personal with the animals in their natural habitats, if you choose. Now, I’m not talking about getting into the enclosure with the animals, I just mean you can see them clearly. With grizzly bears, pandas, polar bears, wolves, and river otters, this zoo will sweep both you and your honey off your feet. And, guess what? Well, during the cold seasons, the zoo provides a ice skating tent, complete with twinkling red, green, and white lights. One of the best ways to reconnect with one another is to discover things together, so why not start by discovering all that the Memphis Zoo has to offer. It will definitely give you something, other than problems, to talk about. Just don’t forget your camera.

Carriage Rides of Memphis
If your relationship has lost its “dazzle,” it is probably time to re-introduce romance into it. How? Well, by taking a carriage ride through downtown Memphis, that’s how. Can you hear the clip-clopping of the horse hooves as your horse trots through the town? I can. The best thing about a carriage ride is that you can relax and enjoy the ride – no pressure – no stress. If you have been having relationship problems, and things are tense, well, this is the best way to de-stress and unwind – together. It is also a good way to escape your problems, at least for a little while, and simply enjoy each other’s company. The carriage ride starts at the famed Peabody Hotel and then travels through a business district. During the trip you will pass by the bustling Beale Street and South Main. And, guess what? These horse-drawn carriage rides are available for both day and night trips. In addition, the majority of the carriages are decorated with sparkling lights to promote love and romance. Moreover, you can request themed-carriage rides (i.e. a carriage that is decorated like Cinderella’s pumpkin carriage, Queen Elizabeth’s carriage, or Cleopatra’s carriage). So, add some romance to your relationship by exploring Memphis with fresh eyes.

Memphis Brooks Museum of Art & Brushmark Restaurant
When was the last time you and your significant other got all “dolled up” and went on a fancy date? I bet it has been a long time – with kids, work, and household responsibilities, couples just don’t have time to go on dates, especially really nice ones. Well, maybe that is what is missing in your relationship – dates. Regardless of whether you have “big money” to go on an expensive date, you can still get dressed up and enjoy an old-fashioned date. How? Well, by taking a tour of the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art then grabbing a bottle or a couple of glasses of your favorite wine at the Brushmark Restaurant. Did you know that this museum is located in a 1916 building and that it features a variety of elegant decorative pieces (art) stemming from the beginning of the century until this present time? It does. In fact, you can find art from the following time periods – French Impressionism, Italian Renaissance, and the Baroque-era, along with 20th-century American creations.
Once you have finished perusing the art work and discussing what you see in the pieces, head over to the Brushmark Restaurant for some grub and wine, as I mentioned before. The good news is that Brushmark Restaurant is open daily for brunch, lunch, and Afternoon Tea, of course. For an out-of-this-world culinary experience, try the delicious Reuben with house-smoked corned beef, sauerkraut, and Swiss or the Salmon BLT with baby spinach and dill aioli. And, if you want to experience a little European culture, don’t forget to try Afternoon Tea (i.e. tea sandwiches, scones, and/or Biscotti with espresso, latte, cappuccino, and/or one of the restaurant’s specialty teas). It is offered every Wednesday from 2 to 4pm.
