Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I’m the Founder of the Relationship Counseling Center in Long Beach, CA. I’m going to give you some information that’s going to be very helpful. It’s going to help you decide if we are the right therapists for you, and even if we’re not, it’s great information that everyone should know about going to therapy and even some practical things about how to pay for it.
So, first of all, we specialize in relationship issues – that’s what we do best. We work with couples and individuals. When couples come in, we create a safe environment in order to help you have a deeper conversation where you can get to the bottom of what is really going on between you two. And with this added clarity, it can be very helpful in knowing how to move forward. We often teach the skills and tools that are necessary for you two to treat each other well and communicate in a healthy way. We not only help you with those in session, but we’re really good at helping you do those things at home so that you can learn how to do it on your own.

Everyone who works at my center is old enough and has enough life experience to back up their skillset. We’re licensed. We are solution-focused therapists, we’re very direct, interactive, we’re down-to-earth. Many people see us as like a relationship coach, we’re active participants helping you in your relationship; we’re not just listening to you each and every session. We’re helping you move forward.

We will help you create relationship goals and it’s very important to have them in therapy. First of all, it’s going to let you know if you’re going in the right direction. Are you getting your money’s worth? Is this working for you? And if it isn’t, we can make adjustments. In addition, when you’re finished with therapy, you will have achieved your goal and it will let all of us know that it’s time to end therapy.

Sometimes people come in who are dating and you want to find that right life partner, and you want to make really healthy good choices in your dating. We do premarital counseling. We help couples that want to set themselves up for success and learn some strategies that are based on your communication styles.

Some practical things: we’re licensed therapists, and as such, you might have out-of-network coverage. You can call your insurance company and ask them if you have that kind of coverage, and if you do, we can give you an invoice that might get you some money back. Also, if you have something called flex spending or health savings accounts, sometimes people use those monies to help pay for therapy.
