Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist and I’m the founder of our center in Honolulu. I want to give you some information to help you make a decision if we are the right Honolulu therapist for you. Not every therapist is the right fit. I’m going to tell you a little bit about our approach and how we do things. I’m going to tell you what to expect when you come to therapy. I think it’s helpful, especially for those of you who’ve never done this before to have some idea what to expect.
I know this can be a somewhat scary and anxiety-provoking experience, reaching out to somebody you don’t know. But reaching out to a licensed professional can be a very smart thing to do. We have a lot of experience. We’ve worked with a lot of people on a lot of life issues and relationship issues, so we bring that wisdom into our sessions. We have a lot of skills and tools that not everyone has, and we try with your help to create a roadmap in your life so that you can move forward in your life in new and healthy ways. It’s probably why we call ourselves solution-focused therapists, because even though we’re here, interactive, and we’re listening, we’re really focused on the solutions that are going to help you in your life to be happy and joyous.
When you come into your first session we’re probably going to ask you how you’re doing and what’s happening in your life, and we’re going to listen to your thoughts, your feelings, and your opinions about your life issue. We’re going to ask a lot of questions, and this interactive approach I think makes couples and individuals feel really comfortable. It’s natural. It’s a natural way to get to know somebody. And I also find that clients learn a lot about themselves because we’re asking questions, and sometimes you have epiphanies about your life experience that you didn’t have before and it could be very helpful.
Many people have friends and family to talk to, some of us do not. Either case, coming to a professional is a really great place. It’s one of those places in the world where it gets to be just about you, and that doesn’t always get to happen in our lives.
A first step could be just to check out the articles and the videos that are on our website. Through those videos you might find a situation that you can relate to that’s very helpful for you. You’re going to get an idea the kinds of advice that we give. The most important step that I can recommend, though, is to reach out and give us a call. We have friendly receptionists that can answer basic questions. And if you want to talk to the therapist in your location near your house or your home. You can ask to talk to the therapist and it’s a great way to get to know them. You can get to know their personality, you can tell them a little bit about yourself. And if you feel comfortable, you can make an appointment.
Now, sometimes people want help paying for therapy, we are out-of-pocket, and sometimes people use what’s called out-of-network insurance. If you have an insurance provider, you can call them and ask if they have an out-of-network plan. And if they do, we can provide you with an invoice that may get you some money back. Sometimes people use what’s called flex spending or health savings accounts or something similar to that, and they use those monies to pay for therapy.
