Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and I’m the Founder of the Relationship Counseling Center in Birmingham, AL. I’m going to give you some information that’s going to be very helpful in understanding if we are the right therapists for you, and even if we’re not, it’s information that I think everyone should know about counseling, in addition to some very practical things, including how to pay for it.

So we specialize in relationship issues. We work with couples and individuals. And when couples come in, we create a safe environment without judgment and blame where you two can get down to the bottom of what is really going on between you two. With this added clarity, clients often find it’s easier to move forward and to treat each other more respectfully. We’re really good at teaching people the right communication skills and tools that are necessary. Not all of us got the handbook when we were growing up. Sometimes because emotions can feel so intense, we forget how to treat each other well. We’ll teach you those kinds of skills, we’ll help you to use those during our sessions, and we’ll also really encourage you to do those at home so that ultimately, you can learn how to get through things really well, and ultimately, not be in therapy.

So first of all, everyone who works for me is not only licensed, but is old enough and has enough life experience to back up their skillset. We’re down-to-earth, we’re interactive, we’re very solution-focused. We’re active participants helping you create the relationship that you want. Now, with your help, we will create relationship goals. It’s very important to have those when you’re doing therapy because it’s going to guide you. You could ask yourself: “Am I meeting my goals? Am I getting my money’s worth?” We can make adjustments if we’re not. In addition, we’re all going to know when it’s time to end therapy because you’ve achieved your goal. That’s what we want.

You can call me as a first step. I might be able to answer the questions that you have, and if everything feels good, I’ll have the Birmingham, AL therapist give you a call as soon as possible. They’re probably going to tell you all the times that they can see you, both day and night. In addition, it’s a great way to get to know the person you’re going to be seeing. They might even ask you a little bit about why you’re coming in. We usually can see you within 24 to 48 hours.

Now, we specialize in marriage counseling and couples therapy, but we also work with individuals sometimes who are in a committed relationship who just want to come in by themselves and get really clear about their relationship; maybe to get some strategies to move forward or to take care of themselves. We sometimes help people who are dating, they’re trying to find that right life partner and want to make a really good decision. We also do premarital counseling, people who are getting married and they want to come in and get some strategies and tools for marriage, and get them specifically designed for your personality, for your communication style. It could be very helpful.

Now, one thing you can do – if you have out-of-network coverage through your insurance, you can call them and verify. We’re licensed therapists, and as such, we may be able to give you an invoice and you can get some reimbursement from your insurance company. Sometimes people even pay for therapy using something like flex spending or health savings accounts. And if you have something like that, you can check with your HR department to see if it’s something you can use towards your therapy.

Now, if you haven’t noticed, we have a lot of videos and articles on this website. I really encourage you to check out the videos because you’re probably going to find a relationship issue that you can identify with. You might even find some advice that can be very helpful for you right now. And you’re also going to get to know us, the kinds of therapists that we are, the kinds of advice that we can give. It’s a great first step. Let me know if there’s anything I can do for you. Thank you.

Contrary to popular belief, my hubby and I don’t have a perfect marriage, but who does, right? There were/are several issues we needed/need assistance with; one of which was/is a nagging problem for quite some time. We’ve had several sessions with him and every time our sessions ended I felt some breakthrough had occurred, no
