Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m the founder of our center in Baton Rouge, and I’m a licensed therapist. I’m going to give you some information that’s going to be helpful in deciding if we’re the right fit for you. And also, if you’re just trying to decide whether or not therapy is going to be helpful for you, I’m going to tell you a little bit about our process, how it works, and the kinds of advice that we give, and the way that we work with our clients.
Everyone in their life runs into roadblocks. We all need help from time to time, we don’t have the answers. And I say this because I think a lot of us, especially in our culture, think that it’s weak to reach out and ask for help, or that there’s something inherently wrong with us that we have to ask for help, and that just simply is not true. Everyone needs help. None of us have the answers all the time, and reaching out to a licensed professional can be a very smart decision. We’ve helped a lot of people, it’s our job to work on bettering your life strategies and find skills and tools that will help you create the life that you want.
When you come into your first session, we’re probably going to ask you your thoughts, your feelings, your opinion about what’s going on in your life. We’re going to have a very interactive dialogue with you about your life, get to know you. We’re going to develop trust. And during this conversation you’re going to get to know yourself better, and I often find that clients, with that deeper understanding, have a whole different perspective on their life and are able to move forward more easily.
We are much like a coach, we are solution-focused therapists. So, you know, with your help we’re going to create a roadmap on how to move forward, we’re going to work on that during your session, and we’re going to support you as you take those strategies out into your life. And it’s important for you to know that because we’re not just here to understand and be good listeners, we’re here to actually help you change your life so that you don’t have to be in therapy anymore; that’s our ultimate goal.
If you want to get to know us more, I might recommend that you check out the videos and articles on our website. First of all, it’s free information and you’re probably going to find a life issue that you currently can relate to. But as far as getting to know us, you’re going to get to know the kinds of advice that we can give by watching some of those videos.
The best thing I can recommend, though, is to pick up the phone and give us a call. We have a helpful receptionist staff that will pick up the phone and answer any practical questions that you might have. And they’re going to direct you to the therapist. You can talk to them on the phone, there’s no commitment at all. Let them know a little bit about what’s going on in your life, talk to them, see if you feel comfortable. They’re going to tell you all the times that you can see them, both day and night. And if all feels good, make an appointment.
Help paying for therapy, you might have insurance, and if you do, give them a call. Ask them if they have what’s called out-of-network coverage. If you have out-of-network coverage, we can give you an invoice that might get you some money back. You might have an employee benefit, something like flex spending. And sometimes clients pay for therapy using those kinds of funds.
