Our Austin therapists are solution-focused, offering individual therapy, couple therapy & marriage counseling.

At our Austin therapy office, licensed therapists help people find healthy ways to target and resolve life issues. Whether through individual counseling, marriage counseling or couples therapy, our Austin therapists can help you figure out how to move forward and make better choices in your life. Many individuals struggle with depression, anxiety, painful relationships or just find themselves in uncomfortable situations that keep happening over and over. We help individuals understand their choices and uncover strategies that will effectively change their life for the better. Individual therapy can often be someone’s first experience feeling safe enough to really uncover the root issues and develop the skills to make healthy changes. Couples often find couples counseling to be the last house on the block. After failed attempts to get your needs met in a relationship, going to therapy can be an effective way to find connection and happiness in your relationship. An experienced therapist can help couples develop a better understanding for each other. When clients finally understand each other they will often begin to treat each other respectfully and more lovingly. We offer the communication tools and skills that help couples create relationship strategies that work. We offer a solution focused approach, and all of our therapists are committed to furthering their expertise through ongoing education.
KathrynKathryn Gates, MFT Focusing on strengths and solutions, Kathryn loves working with couples. She helps clients solve problems as team mates, find more loving ways to express themselves, and listen to understand not only what the other is saying, but how they feel. Kathryn is licensed as a Marriage and Family Therapist and studied Clinical Psychology at Pepperdine University in Southern California. She derives energy from getting to know people, empathically relating and strategically exploring experiences. She knows that often, when couples feel they are in opposition, they aren’t even arguing about the same thing. She works with couples to communicate in ways that reduce defensiveness, and let each person feel supported and respected. Kathryn helps individuals struggling with relationship distress to find empowerment when they have lost hope. Sometimes, only one partner pursues therapy. Even in this situation, improvements can be made. She specializes in couples therapy, marriage counseling and individual therapy.

Video Transcript Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed therapist, and I’m also the founder of our counseling center in Austin. I’m here to give you some information that I think will be very helpful in trying to figure out who the right therapist is for you and whether or not therapy can be of any benefit. A lot of times people are reaching out, they’ve never done this before. I’m also going to help you understand the process and what to expect. In addition, I’m going to give you some information, practical stuff, about how to pay for it; stuff that I think everyone should know. So, first of all, every human being from time to time in their life runs into roadblocks. We don’t have the answers and we feel stuck. It is completely normal and healthy for everyone to have this experience. Reaching out to a licensed psychotherapist could be one of the most profound experiences that you make. This is one of those unique relationships where it gets to be 100% about you, which makes this different than family or friends. Not to say that family and friends isn’t a great support network for those of us that have it, but this is a uniquely safe place to talk about your feelings and experiences. We also are very experienced because we’ve worked with so many people in finding the right kinds of solutions and strategies to help people move forward. We have a wealth of understanding and compassion for people, and human nature. First of all, if you come in, we’re probably going to have you share your thoughts, your ideas, your feelings about your life and about your issue. During that process, I want you to know that we’re very collaborative. We give a lot of feedback, but we also ask a lot of questions. So as you’re sharing about your life, we may pause and ask you a question. What’s really helpful about that is it deepens your own understanding. We ask really great questions and you get to think about things that maybe you didn’t think about before. It illuminates aspects of your issue that you could feel really great. Having a deeper understanding is a great way for us to get to know you and for both of us to figure out the right kind of roadmap to help you move forward in your life. We are solution-focused therapists. Much like a life coach, we not only are active participants in helping you, but we’re going to roadmap and figure out next steps for you, and then give you support as you go out to your life, making subtle adjustments and move forward at the right pace. A good first step could be to watch some of the videos on our website. You can check out some of the articles as well. There’s just great advice on there, good information. It’s a good way to get to know who we are and the kinds of advice that we give. The most profound thing you can do in taking the next step though is really to pick up the phone and give us a call. Without any commitment whatsoever, one of our lovely receptionists can connect you to the right Austin therapist for you. During that phone call, you can tell your therapist a little bit about why you’re coming in, you can get a feeling of who we are, and get comfortable with the person that you may be seeing. It’s a great first step. If you start feeling comfortable on the phone, and only if, I recommend you make an appointment with that person, and really come in to see them and see what they can do for you. If you need help paying for therapy, I recommend you call your insurance company and ask if you have any out-of-network coverage. Sometimes insurance can pay for out-of-network coverage, and sometimes you may have what’s called a health savings account through work, and we can give invoices for both of those things and help you get some sort of assistance perhaps. We do couples counseling, marriage counseling and premarital counseling as well. I hope this video was helpful, and please reach out if you’d like some help. Thanks.

I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist and I’m the founder of the Relationship Counseling Center in Austin. We specialize in relationships. The reason why I chose to create a counseling center that focuses only on relationships is because relationships are one of the most important things in anybody’s life. It’s often what we strive and live for. When we’re really connected and feeling loved, boy, it’s a great experience. For many of us, when that breaks down, it can cause an awful lot of strife, difficulty, and pain. We want to help people figure out how to take care of themselves, and also how to be really happy in relationships.

What’s great is you can come in and see one of our therapists and get a real neutral, independent, third party to help navigate some of the difficult times that you may be having. In relationships, you can come in, and in a non-blaming and non-judgmental experience learn what’s really going on between you two, so with that understanding, can make different decisions in your relationship and treat each other better. That clarity can be very relieving.

Our center is founded on being very interactive. You won’t find us just listening to you. We’re very interactive in our sessions. Clients feel like they’re getting a lot out of it. We give you direct feedback on your relationship and suggestions.

We have a lot of communication strategies. With these tools, you can go home and work on them to hopefully improve your relationship, because of course, you want to learn how to do it at home even more in session because the ultimate goal of therapy is to not be in therapy anymore.

In addition to that, what helps is having a very goal-oriented approach. With your help, we figure out what the relationship goals are for you and that’s how we keep track of your therapy as you move forward. That’s how you now you’re heading in the right direction. It’s also how you know when it’s time to end therapy – because you have achieved your goals, which is the ultimate thing.

Not only are our therapists licensed and experienced and trained in couple’s counseling and relationship issues, but we’ve had a lot of life experience. I don’t hire anybody who hasn’t been around the block enough to have enough life experience and wisdom to know what they’re talking about. That’s important for you to know.

One of the first steps you can do is reach out to me. During our brief conversation, I’ll answer some questions about the practical side of counseling and what the best location is and who the best therapist is for you. If everything makes sense, I’ll have the therapist call you directly as soon as possible. The first conversation with your therapist is great because you can start to get to know them, which is a great first step. In addition, you may let them know a little bit about why you’re coming in and they’ll tell you all the times they’re available to see you whether it’s day or evening and which day of the week.

You might have coverage at work for out-of-network counseling. If you do, we can give you an invoice to help you get reimbursed. If you have any flex spending with your work, that’s another way that sometimes people help pay for counseling.

In parting, I have a lot of videos and articles on my website. They’re great because they’re free for the taking. You can go right now and look up something that’s similar to what’s going on for you and get some real good information – maybe even some suggestions on how to do things differently. Please take it and use it if it can help you.

And of course, if you need some help from somebody in person, reach out to me and I’ll help you get there. Thank you so much. Bye!

Although counseling is a good way to strengthen your relationship, there are many things that you can do to reconnect with your partner. There is no doubt that relationships take work – dedication, love, support, patience, and understanding. Therefore, it is extremely important that you show your partner just how much you love him or her. So, how can you show your significant other how committed you are? Well, by spending quality time with him or her. In fact, one of the best ways to remind yourself just how much you love your partner is by doing things with him or her – things you never tried before and things that you haven’t done in a long time.

What types of things? Well, today is your lucky day, because I have some valuable suggestions. You may not realize it, but Austin has a wealth of fun and relaxing activities that you can do together as a couple. So, regardless of whether you and your sweetheart are spending time absorbing the breathtaking views of the city, strolling through one of its popular parks, or simply walking hand-in-hand alongside a beautiful lake, there are plenty of ways to show the person you love just how important he or she is to you.

Listed below are some ways to reconnect with your significant other:

Mt. Bonnell
Want to spend quality time with your sweetheart, while enjoying the best view in town? If the answer is “YES,” grab your honey and head on over to Mt. Bonnell, also known as Covert Park. Why? Well, because it is an ideal spot for those looking to reconnect with each other and those newly in love. So, grab a bottle of wine or a 6-pack of beer, cheese and crackers, some sweet treats, and a cozy blanket, and make a trip to this beautiful park. There is one catch; however, and that is in order to witness this magnificent view, you have to climb a very long staircase. But, you can do it – together. I have faith in you.

And, if climbing just isn’t “your thing,” well, that is ok too! You can always stroll through the park hand-in-hand, marveling at the lush vegetation, colorful butterflies, and the sparkling lake. And, if you and your sweetheart want to do something a little more “active,” the park offers numerous hiking trails that you can explore at your own leisure. Oh, and in case you haven’t heard – Mt. Bonnell has been linked to relationship longevity. In fact, according to a local legend, many couples have fallen madly in love during their first visits, become engaged during their second visits, and gotten married during their third ones. Cool, huh? So, as you can see Mt. Bonnell offers a wide variety of activities that can and will rekindle the spark in your relationship.

Lady Bird Lake
Another great way to rekindle the fire in your relationship is by spending time at Lady Bird Lake, formerly Town Lake. At Lady Bird Lake you and your partner can take a hike on one of the Lake’s many trails (FYI – some of the trails are 10 miles long – Yikes!), or breathe in the fresh air as you peddle along the edges it. Or, if you are feeling more adventurous, you can jump in a canoe and start paddling, or try out kayaking for the first time. And, if you just want to soak in the atmosphere, well, then there are walking trails on both sides of Lady Bird Lake that are meant for talking and reconnecting with your sweetheart. And, guess what? Well, Lady Bird Lake provides an amazing view of Austin’s skyline. How cool is that?! Can it get any better? Why, yes it can! How? Well, nearby, there are a bunch of really cool restaurants, complete with outdoor patios, rockin live music, and fantastic food.

What restaurants are close to the Lake? Well, the Mexican restaurant, Chuy’s, is known for its mouthwatering chips and salsa, burritos, and margaritas, of course, and Shady Grove has the absolute best patio scene, complete with live music, and then there is Aussie’s Grill & Sport’s Bar , which has some of the best burgers, fries, milkshakes, beer, and volleyball around. Volleyball? Yep, you heard me right – volleyball. So, grab a ball and challenge your significant other to a friendly game of volleyball – what better way to have fun and reduce some of the stress and tension in your relationship? It is also a way to let your competitive natures run wild, but you didn’t hear that from me! Last, but definitely not least, check out a concert or sporting event at the Auditorium Shores, where you can grab a beer and a bag of popcorn, and then sit back and enjoy an exciting game of football, baseball, or soccer. Now that seems like a lot of fun, doesn’t it?
