Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I’ve created this message to help you make a decision if we are the right therapist for you and if therapy is the right next step in your life. I’m going to tell you a little bit about what to expect for your first session, also, the kinds of therapists we are, the kinds of approaches that we take when helping people. I’m also going to give you some practical information about how to help pay for therapy.
Everyone runs into challenges in their life. We all hit roadblocks, and sometimes we don’t have the answers. During those times, it is completely natural and healthy to ask for help. Many of us don’t think it is, and we struggle a lot longer than we need to. When you come to a licensed professional, we’ve come with a wealth of experience; we’ve helped hundreds, if not, thousands of people through all kinds of life issues. Everyone at my center is old enough and has enough life experience also to bring and back up their skillset.
And when you come into your first session, we’re probably going to ask you what’s going on and what’s happening in your life. We want to know your thoughts and your feelings about your life issue, and we’re going to ask a lot of questions. It’s going to be a very interactive exchange, and I think people find that very comfortable. It’s a conversation where we’re moving ahead, trying to find what is at the heart of the matter for you in your life. And with that information, we’re going to help you develop a roadmap to move forward in your life.
We’re solution-focused therapists, so we’re going to teach you skills and tools that are necessary for you to take new steps and also improve your life in healthy ways. We’re going to support you during your session working on these, and most importantly, we’re going to support you taking it outside of our session into your real life, into your relationships, and practice the things that you’ve learned, of course, in your own pace, in your own time.
A good way to get to know us is to pick up the phone. You can talk to the therapist that you would be seeing, and see if you feel comfortable with them. Tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in. Get to know them on the phone a bit before you make that first appointment. You also can ask them when you can come see them, both day and night, to get a good idea whether or not there’s a good match there.
We have a lot of videos and articles on our website. I highly recommend that you check it out because you can probably find an issue that you’re currently going through in your life, and you might even find some good advice that you can apply today. It’s also a good way to get to know who we are and the kinds of advice that we give.
Now, people pay out-of-pocket for therapy at our center; however, sometimes people have what’s called out-of-network coverage. You can call your insurance provider and ask them. Do you have out-of-network coverage? And if you do, we can give you an invoice that could help you pay for therapy. We also help people with invoices who have things like flex spending or health savings accounts. Sometimes people use those monies to help pay for therapy.
