Iliana Stavans, LPC

With over 18 years of clinical experience serving individuals, couples and families, I am dedicated to helping you cope and work to overcome life’s challenges, relationship difficulties and painful circumstances that often result in suffering and distress. In couple’s therapy, I provide a supportive and respectful space where clients increase their awareness of each other’s needs. I assist couples to understand how the “baggage” that each of them brings and their own trajectories have an influence on the relationship. Throughout the therapeutic process, couples attain a greater emotional attunement to each other.  I work collaboratively with you to address your goals and concerns, while placing emphasis on strengths, resilience, insight, personal development and growth.  My style is open and engaged, as I believe that psychotherapy should provide the necessary tools to improve your ability to work through different life situations.

In addition to a Master’s degree in Psychology, I hold a Graduate Diploma in Psychodynamics and a Post-Master’s Certificate in Brief Therapy for families, couples and individuals. I have professional experience working in Mexico, Canada and the US.  I provide therapy in English and Spanish.

Hello. My name is Sevin Philips. I’m a licensed marriage and family therapist, and I’m here to talk about therapy at our Philadelphia center. I want to give you some information that I think is going to be helpful in understanding what kind of therapists we are and really what you might get out of counseling for yourself.

The first thing I’d like to say is that every human being struggles in their life, and at some point, we do not have the answers as how to move forward; we feel stuck. Whether we feel stuck about how we feel inside about ourselves, how we feel about other people, struggles that we have in life to feel connected and to feel happy, to feel satisfied, and feel meaning in our life. And it’s okay to ask for help and it’s important for you to hear that from me. At some point, we all need to ask for help and look for answers that perhaps we ourselves don’t have.

Having an independent party help you by navigating these waters with you, and you’re going to share a lot about yourself in the beginning of therapy as we get to know you. What’s really unique about that is this is a very safe place for many people. You may talk to your family and friends, and if you do, that’s great, but there’s limits to that. There’s certain things that you worry about with friends or family, how they feel about it, you might withhold certain information. And this is a place where you don’t have to do that, so you really can be honest in a very unique and special way. And through that kind of depth, we can help you understand what’s going on for you. When you understand what’s going on for you, you can have more compassion and it’s often easier to look for the right kinds of solutions moving forward.

We are solution-focused therapists, so we do help our clients not only investigate, but figure out the right kinds of skills and tools to apply in your life that will create the kind of change that you want to have.

Sometimes taking the first step is really just reaching out and giving us a call. One of our lovely receptionists can answer basic questions for you and connect you live with one of our Philadelphia therapists that’s probably the best fit for you in the best location. So you can get to know them on the phone. I really encourage you do that. There’s really no commitment at all; you don’t have to make an appointment, you can just talk to the therapist and get to know them, tell them a little bit about what’s going on for you and see if you get a good feeling about them. We also have videos and articles on the website, it’s a tool for you to kind of investigate us a little bit more. I really hope this helps.

Sometimes people worry about how to pay for Philadelphia therapy services, and we are out-of-pocket, but I will tell you that many people have what’s called out-of-network coverage, and you can call your insurance company and find out. If you have any flex spending, those are other ways that people help pay for it. we specialize in couples counseling, couples therapy and marriage counseling.

I hope this is helpful information. Thank you so much. Bye-bye.

Welcome to Relationship Counseling Center Philadelphia. I’d like to answer some questions that you may have that will help you make a decision on what’s best for your relationship and whether we can help you or not.

Relationships are one of the most vital things in our lives. When relationships are going well, we are so happy. And boy, when they break down, it can cause us an awful lot of pain. Learning the kind of tools and strategies to be in a healthy relationship takes a lot of effort, and it also takes a lot of skills. We’re here to help people anywhere in that process. You may be dating wanting to make different decisions in the kind of people you choose. You may want to come in by yourself when you’re in a relationship and learn about what’s going on and get clear about what you can do to take care of yourself or figure out how you can help your relationship from your side. Of course we specialize in marriage counseling and couple’s counseling, so you can come in and work with your partner on your relationship. We create an environment where there’s no judgment and no blame. With that environment, specifically for couple’s therapy, we can help you get really clear about what is actually going on between you two so you don’t have to continue to make the same mistakes. With this clarity and understanding, you can begin to treat each other differently. It’s a great way to start. Not only do we help people in any stage of the process, but the therapists I bring on board are not only licensed and trained in being really good at relationship issues. We’re actually sought after by TV and radio for being expert sources on relationships. Our therapists also have been around the world long enough and had enough life experience to back up their expertise, which is very helpful for you to know. Some things that set us apart is we have a very interactive and direct approach. I think people come into our sessions not only having us listen and understand, but you get a lot of feedback and a lot of direct help with your relationship along the way. We have communication skills and tools to give to you so that you can begin to start using those at home, which is where it really counts. We are goal-directed. And with the goals that you create with your therapist, it will really help you track how you’re doing. Are we really moving ahead in therapy? Is it working for us? You’ll know when it’s time to end because you’ve achieved your goal, and it’s time to part ways.

Here are some things you should know about therapy in general. People usually come in on a weekly basis. It’s the most effective way. Some people consider us short-term therapists in a sense, because we’re very solution-focused. People typically come in anywhere between six to eight times total to work on their relationships. Yours might be less; it might be more. It’s whatever you think is best for you guys.

A first step would be to give me a call so I can answer any questions on location, therapist, etc. Once you call me, I will have the therapist call you immediately so you can speak with that person and get to know them on the phone, which is a great way to get to know them and see if they’re a good fit for you.
In addition, you may tell them a little bit about why you’re coming in. Of course once you talk to your therapist, they’ll give you all the times they’re available whether it’s day or evening and which day of the week.

You may have out-of-network coverage through work or flex spending. You can verify those on your end. We are licensed out-of-network therapists. We may be able to assist you in getting some reimbursement by giving you an invoice with all the codes you may need.

If you haven’t already noticed, I have a lot of articles and videos on our website. It’s a great resource for you. You can use some of that information right now in your relationship. You can get to know the kinds of tools and strategies that we suggest by watching some of those videos. It’s free of charge, so please take advantage of it.

If you want to talk to me and take the next step and see if we can help you, please give me a call. I’d be more than happy to talk with you. Thank you!

Show Some Love in Philadelphia

Philadelphia, appropriately nicknamed the City of Brotherly Love, caters to couples looking to re-invigorate their relationships. Why? Well, because this city offers a wide variety of historical landmarks, romantic restaurants, outdoor events, and other hot spots. How lucky are you? And, do you want to know what is best about your city? Well, it not only has massive history, it also has trendsetters, and everything and everyone in between; so if you are looking for a unique, one-of-a-kind way to reconnect with your sweetheart, well, you are in the right place.

Dare to be different and learn and grow with your loved one. You can re-energize your relationship by venturing outside of your comfort zone. So, grab a couple of sketch books and colored pencils and go to the LOVE Park – sketch what you see – each other and/or your surroundings and then show it to one another. Or, stroll through the Magic Gardens and talk about what you see in the mosaics – what does the patterns and designs mean to you? Just be creative. Truth-be-told, sometimes the best dates are the ones that channel what your city is known for – LOVE.

Re-affirm your love and commitment at LOVE Park aka John F. Kennedy Plaza. This park, which is located near the City Hall, is a popular hangout spot, and a favorite spot for taking pictures and making memories. It is home to Robert Indiana’s LOVE statue and it is the go-to spot for special events and activities. Plus, it offers a sea of fabulously delicious food trucks. Can you smell the tantalizing aromas? I can! And, who can be angry after consuming mouth-watering food? No one! Moreover, what could be better than the superb pic opportunities at LOVE Park? Well, how about the famous Fairmount Park Welcome Center located right by the rotating foods trucks. Score! So, pull out your cameras and snuggle up by the LOVE statue and let LOVE encompass your heart and soul. Remember LOVE is the most powerful emotion in the world.

Race Street Pier
Another multi-fun outdoor waterfront park that is bound to ease the tension in your relationship and aid in reconnection efforts is the Race Street Pier, located on the Delaware River Waterfront, a gumshoe away from the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. This pier is definitely the most relaxing spot in downtown Philly. Why? Well, because it offers you and your partner a panoramic view of the Delaware River, while providing you with the perfect picnic spot (weather permitting, of course). In other words, the pier is perfectly romantic, if you know what I mean. And, do you want to know something really cool about this particular pier? Well, it hosts yoga classes, live music, and firework displays throughout the entire year. Yay! Truth-be-told, the Race Street Pier is a picnic-friendly outdoor venue complete with beautiful perennials and perfectly green grass. It truly is the perfect place to talk, bond, and get to know one another – all over again!

Boathouse Row
Have you ever been to Boathouse Row? No? Well, that is alright, I’m sure thousands of Philadelphians haven’t been either, and if they have, trust me, it was a long time ago. Why is this 19th-century boathouse so good for relationships? Well, because it is really close to the Schuylkill River, which is just west of the Philadelphia Museum of Art. So, you and your loved one can bike, roller blade, or stroll along the river and gaze at the sparkling Boathouse Row lights at night or say “Hello” to early morning revelers. The Boathouse Row provides you and your sweetheart with time to talk, socialize, and enjoy the morning or evening air. What better way to clear your mind and reconnect with your significant other?

Magic Gardens
Do you believe in magic? I do. Well, if your relationship has lost its “zest,” it may be time for you to believe in magic too. It is so easy to become jaded with all of the “bad” in the world, but it is important to remember there is also a lot of good in it as well. So, channel your optimism and head on out to the Magic Gardens. Get lost in the maze of mosaics created by Isaiah Zagar, a renowned artist. Peruse the art pieces and try to figure out the hidden meanings in them – together.

Is there rhyme to Zagar’s reason and if so what is it? Almost every single space is covered with vibrant objects (i.e. tiles, bicycle tires, cement blocks, bottles, etc.) of almost every color. The pieces are inspiring, uplifting, and hopeful, which is just what you need in your relationship right now, especially if you and your loved one are weathering a storm. The gardens are massive – covering almost a ½ of a city block (FYI – it is both indoor and outdoor). What is so great about Magic Gardens? Well, it gleams with originality and an urban reawakening, combined with a touch of pure madness and voila a true masterpiece is created.

Whispering Benches
Have you heard the stories about the Whispering Benches? Have you visited this infamous place? Well, if you haven’t, grab your partner’s hand and give the place a try. As I mentioned previously, sometimes it is important to try something new- different-odd to re-energize your relationship, and I wasn’t lying. And, the Whispering Benches is the perfect place to start. Why is this place so odd, but also so romantic? Well, because couples can proclaim their love for one another here. In case you are unfamiliar with these benches, they are located at Fairmount Park.

The theory is that one lover takes a seat on the stone bench, located in the curve of the Smith Memorial Arch, while the other lover sits on the bench across the street. Then the two people whisper into the monument and their love for one another carries their heartfelt words to each other. In other words, the power of their love is so transcendent that they can hear the other’s words even if they are not next to one another. So, if you and your loved one are having difficulties or are just coming out of a “rough patch” and want to reaffirm your love and commitment to one another, the Whispering Benches is an excellent place to take that first step. Furthermore, this place is a popular spot for first kisses, proposals, and even marriages.
